PM High Speed Steel/Cold Work SteelPM HIGH SPEED STEEL AND COLD WORK STEEL ARE USEFUL MATERIALS FOR HIGH RESISTANT TOOLS E.G. PM 23 TYPE HIGH SPEED STEEL GEAR CUTTERS.
Compared with conventional tool steels these materials have improved properties owing to the fine carbides, absence of segregation and lack of harmful inclusions.
The service offered by the Bodycote HIP group is the processing of these materials e.g. in powder metallurgical applications like billets for semi-finished PM materials or PM composites.
Modern high performance materials are produced via powder metallurgy and hot isostatic pressing.
The bases for these materials are metallic powders (atomized with inert gas) with a higher content of alloying elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium and carbon than in conventionally melted and solidified alloys.
Because there is no segregation during the atomization process each powder particle has nearly the same chemical composition.
In addition the higher contents of carbides are in a finer and more homogeneous distrtribution than in conventional material, which provides a better wear resistance, higher toughness, increased cutting speeds and longer lifetime.
PM materials are free from segregation and serve a wide field of applications.
